Surprise Names Join Manchester City And PSG As Most Expensive Teams

There's no surprise at the top but inside the top 20 there are some teams who should be doing much better.

Premier League tv rights deals for 2019-2022 will be signed pretty soon with the auction to show games having taken place. More money means higher transfer fees but who has spent the most to get their squad to where it is?

'The bubble will eventually burst' a universal truth we keep getting told about football and how much tv providers are willing to show us live games, especially when it comes to the Premier League.

But Sky and BT Sport paid £5.1 billion three years ago and that's likely to go up again this year, although not by that much admittedly.

Check out how Chelsea would have looked without spending all their cash:

Increased tv revenue means teams can spend more on transfers and in turn that should mean increased pressure to win things.

Manchester City and PSG are top of the charts when it comes to spending in Europe according to the CIES Observatory report into transfer fees and they're wearing the badge very well, top of their domestic leagues and leading candidates to win the Champions League.

However some sides are apparently not doing as well with their money. Everton, Southampton and Crystal Palace are in the top 20 spenders in Europe and their results don't reflect that:

Of course sides do have to spend more when they're playing catch-up in the first place but some transfers are just a total waste of money and the bigger the fee paid the more you'll have to spend to fix the problem.

Everton lost Romelu Lukaku in the summer and had to spend big to replace him but the €353 million they've spent should have them in a better position than ninth, and that only after a recent upturn in fortune.

Similarly the money spent by Southampton and Crystal Palace should see them further away from the relegation fight that they find themselves in, especially with Saints having dropped into the bottom three this weekend.

The next 20 positions also feature some English sides in trouble including, somewhat surprisingly, Newcastle United. Napoli's position considering how they're going toe-to-toe with Juventus in Serie A this season is very impressive:

West Ham, Stoke, Newcastle, Watford, Swansea and West Brom should probably think about spending their money more sensibly.
