Pep Guardiola splashed out over £100 million on new defensive recruitment during the summer transfer window, and the Spaniard is now plotting another addition to his back-line.

Manchester City signed Spurs' Kyle Walker and AS Monaco's Benjamin Mendy over the summer with the pair of full-backs costing £50 million-a-piece.

As well as Walker and Mendy, the club snapped up Danilo from Real Madrid.

But Guardiola is already eyeing up more defensive talent while identifying a long-term replacement for Vincent Kompany. The Belgium defender continues to be plagued with injuries.

He missed the 5-0 victory against Liverpool after suffering a calf injury on international duty. His last two Premier League campaigns have been blighted with injuries with the player only amassing 14 appearances in the 15/16 season, and even fewer last season.

The 31-year-old only compiled 11 league outings in Guardiola's debut year at the Etihad. Needless to say, he's hoping to secure a replacement with the manager unable to count on his skipper.

And reports suggest that he's keeping tabs on a Premier League defender. According to reports via The Mirror, City want Spurs' Toby Alderweireld.

The fellow Belgium defender has yet to agree a new contract at Spurs with clubs circling. City are not his only suitors. London rivals Chelsea are also reportedly monitoring his situation.

Spurs shelled out a club record fee to lure Ajax's Davinson Sanchez to North London, but Mauricio Pochettino is obviously reluctant to lose one of his key players to a league rival.

Though Pochettino has slapped a £60 million price tag on Alderweireld should he leave Spurs.

He's contracted till 2020 with City prepared to table an offer next summer should his contract not be renewed.

City were hoping to sign West Brom's Jonny Evans on transfer deadline day, but Tony Pulis rejected the offer as Guardiola looks elsewhere.
