Manchester United need reinforcing at the back, and it appears Jose Mourinho has found his man to fix the clubs defensive frailties.

Enter; Toby Alderweireld.

Per The Mirror, Spurs have opened negotiations with United for the sale of their Belgium international.

Mourinho has identified Alderweireld, and is eager to acquire his services ahead of next season.

The 29-year-old has been subject to intense transfer speculation.

His current deal is set to expire in 2020, and he's failed to renew his Spurs contract with reports suggesting the club are not prepared to offer him his desired wage.

Mirror's report also claims how Alderweireld will be available for just £22 million next summer.

So, naturally, Spurs are hellbent on selling him this transfer window in order to receive a bigger transfer fee.

At first, Spurs were prepared to listen to offers in the region of £55 million.

However, following the mega-sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool for £75 million, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is holding out for a similar price.

Meanwhile, Alderweireld barely featured for Spurs last season.

He played 21 games in all competitions, including 14 Premier League games as a result of injury.

If Alderweireld secures a switch to Old Trafford, it'll be his third English team.

He began his venture in England's top flight on loan at Southampton.

Spurs subsequently snapped him up on a permanent deal, signing him for £11.5 million from Atletico Madrid in 2015.
