Newcastle's return to the Premier League following their relegation to the Championship may have been secured swiftly and effectively, but the Magpies have been far from effective in the transfer market, this summer.
While the club have completed deals for Jacob Murphy, Florian Lejeune and Javier Manquillo this summer, manager Rafa Benitez has become frustrated with the club not conducting enough business, especially with the beginning of the new season rapidly approaching.
However, news has broken today that the club have in fact brokered a deal for Borussia Dortmund's Spanish u21 midfielder Mikel Merino, news which will be greeted with a welcome sigh of relief by Benitez.

Merino will travel to the North East to put pen to paper on a contract at St. James' Park, after spending just one season with Dortmund.

The midfielder, who can also operate as a centre-half, was part of the Spanish u21 team that made it to the final of this summer's European Championships, before being beaten by Germany in the final.
The former Osasuna youngster was identified by the Bundseliga giants as one for the future, yet failed to settle at Signal Iduna Park and made just seven appearances for BVB, last season.

With Merino on board, Benitez will target another four signings before the transfer window closes at the end of August, with a new striker at the top of his shopping list.
