Luka Modric Reveals The Bet He Made With Real Madrid Teammate Over Cristiano Ronaldo

Before Cristiano Ronaldo left Juventus his teammates were talking about the chances of him leaving the Bernabeu.

Luka Modric didn't believe that Cristiano Ronaldo was going to leave Real Madrid after winning their third Champions League in a row together as the Croatians bet with a teammate proves.

In the moments that followed Real Madrid winning their third Champions League in a row, after beating Liverpool in the final, Cristiano Ronaldo let it slip in an interview that he might leave Los Blancos.

The suggestion was met with plenty of cynicism. Not only did it feel a bit 'boy who cried wolf,' after the five time Ballon d'Or winner's previous suggestions he could leave, and the fact people felt he was just trying to take the focus off Gareth Bale's match winning goals.

Of course we now know that people were wrong to think any else of Ronaldo than he actually did want to leave as he moved to Juventus in the summer for around £90 million.

The departure was a double blow for Florentino Perez and Real as they also lost manager Zinedine Zidane after the unprecedented success, in the Champions League era.

Luka Modric has confirmed that fans weren't the only ones who thought Ronaldo wouldn't leave, saying:

"I did not think that Zidane was going to go, nor Ronaldo," he said to L'Equipe.

"When the rumour about Cristiano came up we made bets among ourselves in the dressing room and we were sure he was going to stay, but everyone makes his life choices."

Modric's own performances in helping Real to their 13th Champions League title, and in helping Croatia reach the World Cup final for the first time, led the midfielder to beating his former teammate to the Best FIFA Men's Player Award last month.

The pair are also on the shortlist for the Ballon d'Or at the end of the year but he stopped short of saying he deserves to win saying, "To be honest, I do not like to talk like that and say: 'Yes, I'm the one who deserves the Ballon d'Or.'

"The important thing for me is to be in the field as I have been for months, this year 2018 has undoubtedly been the best of my career and my only goal is to continue at this level."

Unfortunately Modric didn't actually confirm what he lost in the bet, other than Cristiano Ronaldo as a teammate of course.
