If there's one thing that will soften the blow for Schalke fans hearing that Max Meyer is leaving their club in the summer it's the fact that this time it's unlikely to be Bayern Munich getting one of their players.

Being a team in Germany not called Bayern Munich does tend to mean that when your players are doing well there's a good chance they'll end up playing for a club in Germany who are called Bayern Munich.

In recent years Borussia Dortmund, Stuttgart, Hoffenheim, Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen have all seen players who have showed even the slightest of good form move to Munich.

The Dortmund what might have been side is basically just Bayern's team...

This summer we already know that the Bundesliga juggernaut will be continuing to eat up the opposition as they've already secured the signing of Schalke's best player Leon Goretzka.

A huge blow for the Bundesliga's second best team this season but they do have another good young German midfielder in the shape of Max Meyer only that won't actually be the case with the club today announcing that the 22 year-old will be leaving on a free in the summer.

Speaking in a press conference today Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel said, "Max Meyer will definitely leave Schalke in the summer.

"A change is part of football. We're dealing with it in a highly professional manner... Max Meyer will be treated fairly until the final matchday."

The news could peak the interest of Arsenal and Liverpool who have both been linked with a move for Meyer in the past and a free transfer for a player so talented and young will always attract competition.

Liverpool had been after Goretzka but lost out to Bayern. Should they lose Emre Can, their own German midfielder whose contract runs out in the summer, then a move for Meyer could be an excellent replacement. Jurgen Klopp's side are already awaiting the arrival of Naby Keita from the Bundesliga this summer.

Meyer remained on the bench during his side's latest game at the weekend as Schalke drew 2-2 with relegation threatened Koln. Schalke took a 2-0 lead and had they won they'd have sent their opposition down. The home side fought back to level the scores and because Koln finished stronger they were unlucky not to win.

Schalke will just be relieved the latest player to leave is unlikely to be for the Allianz Arena.
