Manchester United remain hellbent on drafting in new talent ahead of the 2017/18 season, but their latest transfer is an interesting choice.

Jose Mourinho has already snapped up the highly-rated Benfica defender, Victor Lindelof, while deals for the likes of Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata, Inter Milan's Ivan Perisic and AS Monaco's Fabinho are supposedly in the works.

And as United monitor Europe's elite, it appears the club have now turned their attention to a relegated Premier League player.

According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web, Mourinho is interested in signing Boro's Marten de Roon.

The 26-year-old joined Boro, after they secured promotion to the Premier League last summer, from Atalanta for £12 million.

De Roon was one of few bright spots in the season which saw them ultimately get relegated to the Championship.

He featured in 33 league games and scored four goals. Yet, needless to say, clubs across Europe are keeping tabs on the Dutch international.

A return to Italy with former side Atalanta is being muted not to mention Lazio who have also expressed an interest.

But the Italian duo face stiff competition from United. The Old Trafford club are hoping to sign him up for a cut price £8.8 million.

Mourinho has reportedly lined him up with a deal for Perisic dragging on. De Roon will be a much cheaper alternative and a player who has experienced England's top flight.

The report continues to add by saying former Boro boss Aitor Karanka may have recommended the transfer of de Roon.

Karanka brought the midfielder to the country and has kept in close touch with Mourinho who he used to work alongside while at Real Madrid.

And in the last campaign, the player left a lasting impression on the Portuguese manager.

"Boro have a good team, a solid midfield," Mourinho said following the 3-1 victory at the Riverside.

"This kid De Roon is phenomenal, his work-rate is phenomenal, they're solid and they play direct."
