Manchester United Make Huge Bid For Juventus Winger Douglas Costa

The Premier League side are in need of a right winger but the Serie A side clearly aren't going to let Costa go cheaply.

Manchester United are hoping to kick off their new year with a big name signing. The Red Devils have had a huge bid for Juventus' Douglas Costa turned down ahead of the January transfer window.

In the summer Jose Mourinho brought in three players to Manchester United. Goalkeeper Lee Grant, full back Diogo Dalot and midfielder Fred were all brought into Old Trafford but Mourinho wanted more.

In truth all three players who were brought in were merely to replace those who had left the team at the end of last season. Grant replaced Sam Johnstone, Dalot replaced Daley Blind, although he was likely supposed to replace Matteo Darmian, and Fred replaced the retired Michael Carrick.

Whilst Mourinho and the players previously at his disposal haven't done well enough this season United have looked short of a couple of players, especially at centre back.

There's no doubt though that Jose had plenty of money to spend in his two and a half years at Old Trafford so it's no surprise he wasn't given any more considering he didn't spend it well.

According to reports though the club are ready to boost the side with cash now there's no Mourinho. According to Rai Sport, via Calciomercato, United have had a 'Super €60m offer' for Juventus' Douglas Costa turned down.

The Red Devils haven't had a recognised right winger for a few years and have often played Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard or Marcus Rashford in the position, all more comfortable in the centre of the park.

So it's no surprise that a right winger would be amongst their priorities for a January signing, although a centre back is still likely to be top of the pile.

Costa has started just three Serie A games for league leaders Juventus so far this season.

With Mourinho gone it'll be interesting to see if United do much in the transfer window. They currently only have an interim manager in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and they are yet to appoint a director of football.

That means that Ed Woodward is likely to be in charge of transfers still but will be making decisions without anyone in place in management for the long term.
