David de Gea's short term future at Manchester United might have been sorted out this week but the goalkeeper, who is arguably the most important player at Old Trafford, wants to know one thing before committing long term.

Things aren't going well at Manchester United right now but the way they can get worse is if David de Gea was to decide that he wanted to leave Old Trafford.

The Spanish goalkeeper has easily been United's best player since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club, winning the club's Player of the Year award four times in the past five years to make him the player to have won the award most.

De Gea's contract was due to run out at the end of the season and PSG were reportedly ready to swoop in January to offer him the chance to join them on a free and become the world's best paid goalie.

Fortunately for the Red Devils the former Atletico Madrid keeper did have a one year extension option for them to stop that free transfer happening for now, and they activated that year.

However they will come up against the problem again this time next year so they want him to sign on for longer. According to the Mirror his decision will depend on what the future of the club is and finding out whether or not Jose Mourinho will still be manager.

The report doesn't say that the decision one way or the other will make the Spaniard's mind up but that he wants to know what direction the club is going and how ambitious they are.

That might suggest he wants Mourinho to go but equally it might just be a case of backing the former Real Madrid boss and giving him the transfer funds and support needed to compete for honours.

De Gea also wants to be paid like one of United's best paid players. Whether that means getting parity with Alexis Sanchez, who is on a reported near £500k-a-week, or slightly less than that is not known.

Really the 13 time Premier League champions should give the goalkeeper whatever he wants as he'd be ridiculously expensive to replace.

If they can't get him to sign a new deal by the summer then they may need to sell or risk losing him in summer 2020 on a free.
