Just where would Manchester United be without David de Gea? They'd be closer to the exit of the Champions League that's for sure. It looks like they won't have to contemplate life without him as he is set to sign a new deal.

David de Gea's introduction to English football seems a long time ago now. When the Spanish goalkeeper arrived from Atletico Madrid he was still a teenager and prone to errors that left many questioning if he could make it in England.

Now De Gea is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, arguably the best, and his save against Sevilla on Wednesday night both proved that point and kept United well and truly alive in the match.

For fans of the Old Trafford side, and for Jose Mourinho, the thought of losing De Gea now would seem like the ultimate bad news. Real Madrid have constantly been linked with the 27 year old and are still looking for a new goalkeeper.

According to the Times though United fans can put any worries away at least for the time being. The newspaper report that De Gea is set to sign a new £220,000-a-week contract, keeping him at the club till at least 2021.

There are just 18 months left on De Gea's current deal and though the club had the option of extending his current deal to 2020 with their option it makes more sense to keep him tied down for as long as possible.

Re-negotiating the deal also means that they can up his wages to ward off Los Blancos, or any other suitors, and Real are likely to look elsewhere.

Keylor Navas hasn't exactly been a bad keeper for the Champions League champions but they have been lining up replacements ever since the fax machine stopped their move for De Gea in the August 2015.

Thibaut Courtois will once again be favourite this summer, especially now the United keeper could be tied up to a long term deal.

Now if Jose Mourinho can just get the rest of his team to play to his keepers level they'll be fine.
