In a summer of goalkeepers moving more than they do in a game perhaps the most surprising move is Robert Green to Chelsea with the out of work keeper reportedly in talks with the Premier League giants.

Summer transfer windows are no place for goalkeepers. Usually keepers stay pretty well put with only the odd move for a keeper here or there, whilst whole outfield teams can be replaced by a team at any point.

This summer seems to be a whole different ball game though with keepers on the move wherever you look, slowly obviously but they're on the move.

Already in this transfer window we've seen Gianluigi Buffon join PSG, Alisson join Liverpool, Bern Leno moving to Arsenal, Alex Meret going to Napoli, Alban Lafont going to Fiorentina, Mattia Perin head to Juventus, Rui Patricio swap Sporting for Wolves and Lee Grant take the gloves at Manchester United, and more too.

Already we have to assume that Thibaut Courtois will move to Real Madrid, and if he doesn't then they'll be trying to sign someone else, but Chelsea's replacement could come as a shock.

According to the Daily Mail the Blues are in talks with former West Ham and QPR keeper Rob Green as they attempt to sign the ex England international on a free contract.

Of course Green wouldn't actually be the the potential replacement for Courtois and would only be a third choice keeper at Stamford Bridge, behind whoever were to replace the Belgian or the Belgian if he doesn't actually leave.

The other reason that Maurizio Sarri's side could look to bring in the 38 year old goalkeeper is to boost their homegrown numbers.

Premier League clubs must name eight players who are 'home grown' in their 25 man squad for the season and after letting Jamal Blackman leave on loan to Leeds the Blues could fall behind that number.

Green, who was released by Huddersfield at the end of last season, would boost those numbers back up but would still remain behind Willy Caballero and whoever is number one next season.

Chelsea have been linked with Jack Butland, Jordan Pickford and Kasper Schmeichel should their current number one end up leaving for Real Madrid.
