Benfica have made £864 million in the last 10 years, just from selling players, but the Portuguese club are actually second behind Atletico Madrid on the list.

To many seeing Ajax selling players after the Dutch champions reached the Champions League semi-finals has been quite sad but the Eredivisie club are used to selling their academy products once they blossom.

Another club who have been accustomed to make a profit on player sales is Benfica and, according to Transfermarkt, the Portuguese side have made £864 million in the last 10 years doing so.

That figure however still pales in comparison to Atletico Madrid, with the Spanish side making £873 million in the same time frame.

The big difference between Atleti and Benfica doesn't come in the amount they've made from transfers though but in their net spend.

'Net spend' might be derided because of that infamous Arsenal Fan TV clip but in terms of comparing the two teams it's probably more important than just their incomings.

In the same 10 year period the Spanish side have spent £900 million on transfers, in comparison with Benfica's £333 million, which is the least in the top 10 of profits made on sales list.

That means that in terms of net spend the Portuguese side have made £589 million whilst Atleti have spent £31 million, quite the difference.

In that decade period Benfica have sold some of the best players in the world. Angel di Maria, David Luiz, Axel Witsel, Nemanja Matic, Jan Oblak, Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo Renato Sanches, Goncalo Guedes, Nelson Semedo, Victor Lindelof, Luka Jovic and Joao Felix are amongst those to have left.

The last two went for significantly different prices with Eintracht Frankfurt paying just £6 million for Jovic before selling him on to Real Madrid for £54 million.

Felix on the other hand went to Atleti for £113 million with the Spanish side then selling Antoine Griezmann to Barcelona

Benfica have spent money this summer signing Raul de Tomas from Real Madrid, Chiquinho from Moreirense and Jhonder Cadiz from Vitoria Setubal. Based on recent history, expect them all to be sold for loads in the next few years.
