Arsenal beat Bayern Munich in a pre-season friendly in China. What's more, the English side beat their German counterparts on PENALTIES!

And if Arsene Wenger has his way, he hopes to beat them again to the signing of a German wonderkid.

While Arsenal have made some big inroads already in this summer market, with the club record signing of Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette, Wenger is hoping to continue his summer splurge.

The long serving Frenchman is keeping tabs on AS Monaco star Thomas Lemar with a reported big money offer rejected.

And it appears the club are now monitoring Schalke's Leon Goretzka. The German midfielder is attracting plenty of interest with Bayern Munich very keen on acquiring his services.

Per reports from German outlet SportBild, Wenger has been monitoring the player and is confident of striking a deal before the end of the window.

The 22-year-old has just the one year left on his current contract though Schalke are holding out for an offer in the region of £26 million.

He's reportedly been offered a new deal which is worth €8 million-a-year salary but the player is holding for €10 million-a-year salary.

As well as Arsenal and Bayern, fellow Premier League duo Liverpool and Manchester City have also expressed an interest.

Goretzka enjoyed a breakout performance in the Bundesliga last season as he played 30 league games while scoring five goals, subsequently earning a call-up to the Germany squad for the Confederation Cup.

While Joachim Low selected an inexperienced side by leaving out many high-profile names at home, the squad was full of youthful and dynamic players.

Including Goretzka who starred for Germany as they bagged the Confederation Cup. He netted three times from midfield which saw him collect the Silver Boot.

Where will Goretzka be plying his trade, next season? Watch this space.
