Take a bow, son. I mean that, take a bow!

On December 8th 2004 it was the goal that put Liverpool through to the knockout stages of the Champions League but by May 2005, in Istanbul, Steven Gerrard's wonder goal was the seminal moment of what would be one of the most dramatic Champions League triumphs of all time.

Heading into their final group game of the Champions League in 2004, Liverpool sat three points behind opponents Olympiakos in third place in Group A knowing only a win by two goals would take them through to the knockout stages.

The Reds started the campaign with a good win over the previous season's beaten finalists Monaco but dropped points in three of the next four games to leave themselves in danger of going out in the first round proper after going through the qualifying rounds.

Things didn't start well for Rafa Benitez' side as legendary Brazil forward Rivaldo put the Greek side ahead after just 27 minutes from a free kick, meaning the Anfield crowd would need to cheer their side onto three more goals without reply.

Liverpool had their chances in the first half but couldn't get level. At half time Benitez brought on Florent Sinama-Pongolle in place of Djimi Traore. It was a risk that would soon pay off.

Just two minutes into the second half the home side were level through their substitute. Harry Kewell played in a cross for the Frenchman and Pongolle scored.

Gerrard had a goal disallowed on the hour mark but other than that time seemed to be running out for the English side. With just 13 minutes left Neil Mellor was brought on for Milan Baros and again the substitution worked.

Within minutes of coming on the homegrown striker gave Liverpool hope. Antonio Núñez was saved and Mellor followed up to knock it over the line. But time was running out.

There was just four minutes plus added on time remaining when Mellor headed down a Jamie Carragher ball into the box that was met by Gerrard's thunderous drive into the bottom corner. It took Liverpool through and Andy Gray's commentary became iconic, take a bow son!

Liverpool would of course go on to win the Champions League and it was Gerrard's brilliant finish in the most dramatic of ways that kicked it all off!
