The Reds are trying their best to make him a Liverpool player...

Liverpool are pursuing a deal for Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, with Phil McNulty from the BBC saying that the Reds have opened talks with the Gunners over the signing of the 24-year old.

And while his transfer excites Liverpool fans, he may well go up further in their estimations when they watch this exchange he had with Reds legend Steven Gerrard after Arsenal's 2-1 FA Cup final win over Chelsea in May.

Check out the following clip, with the juiciest bit coming around 40 seconds onwards:

With Ox being interviewed by BT Sport's Jake Humphrey at the end of a big win for Arsenal, he offered his thoughts on his positional change.

" I don't mind it. Playing for a team like Arsenal, it ends up being more of a right-wing job," he said.

"I get to come from deep and I think that plays into my hands more. When I play out wide, I'm not so used to running off the ball in behind, I prefer the ball to feet and in that sense I've really enjoyed it.

"At the end of the day, it's given me minutes and I'm not one to complain."

But then came the revelation that his wish is to play as a central midfielder and follow in the footsteps of Steven Gerrard, who was stood pitchside next to him at Wembley.

"But, the centre-mid role... I've always wanted to be Steven Gerrard, so I've still got a hope of that." he added.

That hope is definitely still there for Ox, particularly with Liverpool now pushing to sign the Southampton youth product before Thursday's deadline. Chelsea looked to be in pole position for him after they had a bid accepted by Arsenal, but it later emerged that Chamberlain had rejected the move as he would likely also be playing as a wing-back at Chelsea, as he has done for Arsenal in every game this season.

David Ornstein, a top-tier source for all-things Arsenal, Tweeted that Chamberlain's preference is Liverpool:

Should Liverpool match Chelsea's reported £40 million bid this summer, and Ox agree terms, he would be expected to take up his favoured central midfield role at Anfield, where he took to the pitch for Arsenal in a dismal 4-0 defeat to Jurgen Klopp's side on Sunday. If he does move to Liverpool, though, he won't be able to take on Gerrard's famed No.8 shirt as that has already been handed to club-record signing Naby Keita, who will join next summer after a £55 million fee was agreed with RB Leipzig.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has made a total of 198 appearances for Arsenal since joining from Southampton for an initial £12 million in 2011.
