Jose Mourinho Makes History After Europa League Success Tonight

A big achievement for the United boss.

Jose Mourinho guided Manchester United to the only European trophy they have never won tonight, booking United's place in next season's Champions League thanks to victory over Ajax.

And the Portuguese also made a bit of history himself with the success in Stockholm.

The 2-0 win scored over Ajax, via a deflected strike from Paul Pogba in the first half and a close-range acrobatic effort from Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the second half, means that Mourinho becomes the first manager to win the Champions League as well as the UEFA Cup/Europa League - on multiple occasions.

He has also won both the Champions League, and UEFA Cup/Europa League with different club sides.

A UEFA Cup win with Porto got it all under way back in 2003, with Mourinho's side overcoming Celtic in the final.

A memorable Champions League campaign ended in triumph over Monaco in the 2004 final; a feat that prompted Roman Abramovich and Chelsea to hand him the managerial reins at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho won back-to-back league titles at Stamford Bridge but failed to win the Champions League. He would then go on to win Europe's premier competition as part of a treble-winning season with Inter Milan. A double from striker Diego Milito in the 2010 final against Louis van Gaal's Bayern Munich gave Mourinho his second Champions League winners medal.

And the victory tonight at the Friends Arena, in what was quite possibly the biggest night in the 54-year old's 16-year stint as a manager in the game, means Mourinho has now won the Europa League, the updated version of the UEFA Cup, for a second time.

United as a club made history tonight as they became only the fifth club to win every major trophy in European football.

Europa League/UEFA Cup was the only trophy United had yet to win but the the win in Stockholm means they now join an elite group of teams to have lifted all of the three major trophies in European club football.

United have lifted the Champions League/European Cup on three occasions, in 1968, 1999 and 2008 while they also defeated Barcelona in Rotterdam in 1991 to win the old Cup Winners' Cup which was scrapped in 1999.

Bayern Munich, Juventus, Chelsea and this evening's opponents Ajax are the only other four teams who have completed the continental treble in history.

The final, and most important accomplishment for United tonight is that they have clinched a spot in the Champions League group stage next season after after spending two of the last three campaigns outside of Europe's premier club competition.

The Europa League triumph is United's second trophy of the season, following on from the 3-2 EFL Cup final win over Southampton back in February.
