Barcelona Set Impressive Record In Win Over Valencia

Luis Enrique's side set an impressive record last night.

Barcelona and records go pretty much hand in hand. It's believed that Lionel Messi doesn't talk to anyone for three days if a match goes by where he doesn't break a record. Fortunately for everyone they'll be no slammed doors this week as the team set a very impressive record.

In the 12 years before 2005 Barcelona won La Liga just three times. In the 12 seasons that have come from that year on they have won the Spanish league eight times, with Real Madrid's three and Atletico Madrid's unlikely title victory the only blemishes on their record.

Lionel Messi celebrates breaking another record, mainly happy he doesn't have to punch the wall he hits when he doesn't break one!

During that same period the Spanish side have captured four Champions League trophies and been in numerous quarter and semi finals. For good measure there's also been four Copa del Rey title wins, and another final to come this season.

So these 12 years have been pretty profitable for them and records have often tumbled especially because of Messi.

Last night they set a very impressive record in their 4-2 win over Valencia but it had little to do with Messi this time. Last night Barca became the first team in 46 years to get to the 29th match of a La Liga season without giving away a penalty or having a player sent off!

Gerard Pique annoyed a referee has dared to send him off. "Don't you know who I play for" he's heard to shout.

The last time Barca gave away a penalty in the league was on Valentine's Day last year against Celta Vigo and the penalty they conceded wasn't even the most interesting of the match. That game included the penalty when Messi passed to Suarez from the spot!

And no Barca player has seen red in the league since Javier Mascherano saw red against Eibar in October 2015! That's a ridiculously long time without a player seeing red!

Mascherano gets sent off and Barcelona players explain to the ref that only opposition players are allowed those.

The last time any team in Spain's top league went without giving away a penalty or having a man sent off in their opening 28 games of the season was in 1970/71 and back then you had to take a machete to an opposition player to see red.

Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez top the list for Barcelona's worst disciplined players this season with seven yellow cards and Suarez has avoided biting anyone.

Presumably the rest of Barca's players are saints...
