Jose Mourinho handed Anthony Martial a start in the Champions League and the Frenchman didn't disappoint his manager or his adoring fans. Afterwards he lapped up the appreciation of the travelling Manchester United faithful.

Anthony Martial looked likely to leave Manchester United in the summer. The Frenchman's inconsistent form led to him being overlooked first by his club manager and then by his national team manager last season.

That led to him being unhappy at Manchester United and with Jose Mourinho wanting a new winger it looked like the former Monaco man was going to be leaving Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.

United never bought a new forward and in turn Martial never left the north west. The 22 year old got his first start in the Red Devil's embarrassing loss to Brighton and was taken off having not made much of an impact.

He then came on as a substitute last weekend in the game against Watford, making his appearance as a 71st minute replacement for Jesse Lingard.

That led to him getting another start in United's opening group game of the Champions League against Young Boys and had an excellent game, scoring United's third in a 3-0 win.

After the match the fans serenaded him with his own song as he applauded the away support:

The 22 year old also took to Twitter after the game to thank the fans, having scored his first goal since Mourinho's side beat Burnley back in January

More recently there's been reports that the former Monaco youngster, who was brought to England by Louis van Gaal, would be signing a new contract, although nothing has been made official yet.

Could this be the turning point for Martial in Mourinho's team? He's certainly a fan favourite and they'd hate to see him leave.
