Lionel Messi was hoping to add another Copa del Rey trophy to his incredible trophy collection but instead Barcelona lost to Valencia and he was served some of his own usual punishment by Francis Coquelin.

It's just a few weeks ago that most people would have been backing Barcelona to complete another treble. The La Liga title was wrapped up, they were 3-0 up to Liverpool after the first leg of the Champions League semi final and had a Copa del Rey final to look forward to,

However after Saturday night they've ended the season with only the league title. They capitulated in the Champions League second leg and last night lost to Valencia in the Copa del Rey final.

Valencia went 2-0 up thanks to goals from Kevin Gameiro and Rodrigo in the first 33 minutes and, despite Barcelona having 26 shots, Ernesto Valverde's side were restricted to a consolation from Lionel Messi.

The Catalan giants were once again hoping for miracles from their all time top scorer but he wasn't able to stop them losing, in fact someone even doled out Messi's usual brand of punishment to the five time Ballon d'Or winner.

Valencia midfielder Francis Coquelin managed to nutmeg himself out of trouble, against Messi, in the dying minutes, leaving the Argentine on the floor:

Coquelin joined the Spanish side from Arsenal in January 2018 for €14 million and has played 41 games in all competitions for the club this season.

The Frenchman was joined by fellow former Gunner Gabriel Paulista as Valencia won their first silverware since last winning the Copa in 2008.

The 28 year old had another run in with Messi as he made an excellent challenge on the Barca man:

Messi will be hoping that after a relatively poor season by Barca's standards he can finally win an international trophy with Argentina in the Copa America.

For now though he has to live with the feeling that he usually leaves others with, that's gotta hurt.
