Jose Mourinho Joke About David De Gea Didn't Go Down Well

David de Gea is the one player that Manchester United can't afford to lose but the Spanish goalkeeper was offended by his former manager's joke on live television last year.

When Manchester United played Spurs last week it wasn't the first time that David de Gea had produced a masterclass for his team to provide a big win and it's unlikely to be the last time either.

They often say that a good goalkeeper can be worth up to 10 points a season, remember when Arsenal fans said it about Petr Cech and then he wasn't great in his first season, and never is that truer than with De Gea.

In the game against Spurs the Spaniard saved 11 shots to keep Mauricio Pochettino's side at bay, leaving Marcus Rashford's goal to take all the spoils for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team.

Madly it wasn't even De Gea's record for most saves in a game, he managed to stop Arsenal scoring on 14 occasions in the two side's meeting last season.

The former Atletico Madrid keeper has been United's most important player since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, winning four of the five 'Player of the Year' awards since.

However when De Gea picked up his award last year he ended up being offended. According to the Times Jose Mourinho chose that moment to make a joke.

When the 28 year old went up to get his award his then manager remarked, "David deserves a third award . . . he's the worst player in training . . . when it's cold and wet he doesn't save much in training."

According to the newspaper it was meant as a joke from Mourinho but it was met with nervous laughter and didn't go down well with the goalie or his teammates.

The awards were live on MUTV and he might have got away with it in training but instead players didn't appreciate the humour at all.

Not that it's to blame but De Gea was already in contract negotiations at the time, last May, but he is still yet to sign a new deal at Old Trafford.

The keeper isn't unhappy at the club but he's yet to agree to terms and with just 18 months left on his current contract he could negotiate a free move with teams outside of England from this time next year.

United desperately need to hold on to their number one, they'll be no laughter if he leaves.
