Andres Iniesta Rang Real Madrid Players To Apologise For His Absence

No Barcelona players went to the awards.

This week Cristiano Ronaldo was casually picking up yet another award to add to his ever growing collection, he must spend so much on silver polish. Meanwhile Barcelona players were too busy getting ready for their cup game to attend the ceremony, or at least that's that we thought.

Ronaldo of course was being named 'The Best' by FIFA at their brand new awards. The name is pretty shite if you ask me but it kind of gets to the point I guess as that's exactly what he was in 2016, at least according to the votes.

Whilst the Real Madrid superstar was picking up his shiny metal ice-cream cone no Barcelona players were in attendance at the awards despite the fact that Lionel Messi finished second and a number of the players were in the FIFpro team of the year.

Despite Barcelona directors being at the awards in Zurich Real Madrid's directors were still annoyed that the players weren't there. According to Spanish newspaper Marca, to try and smooth things over Andres Iniesta rang members of the Real Madrid team to apologise for not being there.

It was claimed that the La Liga champions stayed at home because they didn't believe travelling to Zurich for the awards would give them enough time to be ready for their Copa del Rey match against Athletico Bilbao tonight.

However during his phone calls to the Real players legendary midfielder Iniesta apparently revealed that the real reason they missed the ceremony was because of "differences with their own club's hierarchy".

In the FIFpro XI Ronaldo was joined by teammates Marcelo, Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos whilst the Barcelona players who missed out on getting their awards were Gerard Pique, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Iniesta whilst former Barca man Dani Alvez was there.

On receiving his award Ronaldo mentioned the absent rivals saying, "I would have liked it if Messi were here, as well as the rest of the Barcelona players. But they have a cup game, so it's perfectly understandable."

Despite Iniesta's best efforts the two clubs may hate each other even more now!
