Cristiano Ronaldo might have played a huge part in Matthijs de Ligt's decision to join Juventus this summer.

It appears that the 19-year-old defender is close to joining the Italian champions for €70m, according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf; a bargain transfer fee considering his undeniable potential.

There are also suggestions that a contract worth €20m per year is on the table, which would make him the second highest paid player in Serie A behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

De Ligt has been linked with a number of clubs in recent months, including Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.

But a brief chat with the five-time Ballon d'Or may have swayed his decision.

Ronaldo decided to have a cheeky word with De Ligt after Portugal's 1-0 win over the Netherlands in the Nations League final.

When the 19-year-old Dutch centre-back was asked if he would be Ronaldo's teammate at the Old Lady, he told NOS Sport via GOAL:

"That could be true, yes." he said.

"I didn't understand him at first. I was a little shocked, so I laughed, but I didn't say anything.

"Shortly after the game, you are not at all concerned with it, you are disappointed you have lost and that is the only thing you are thinking about."

Of course, the lure of playing under new manager Maurizio Sarri could have also played a role.

It looks like De Ligt has made his highly anticipated decision while on vacation in Miami.

"I'm going on holidays now," he said following the Nations League defeat.

"I'm going to think about what's best for me and then I'll decide. It's important for a young player to play, that's the only thing I'm sure of."

if he were to join the Italian champions, then he would have to fight for his place at the heart of defence, with the likes of Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini featuring heavily last season.

Do you think Ronaldo played a role in De Ligt's decision to join Juve? I mean, someone of his calibre could easily turn your head.
