The Premier League Should Become 'The Netflix Of Football'

The Premier League Should Become 'The Netflix Of Football'

Make it happen!

With the cost of watching Premier League games in the UK at a ridiculous price, surely a Netflix-style platform is the way to go?

That's the suggestion from former Crystal Palace Simon Jordan, who also had some intriguing and passionate thoughts on the league's search for a replacement for former executive chairman Richard Scudamore.

He feels as though the way forward for the Premier League brand in terms of satisfying fans but also bringing in extra venue, is to have all games on a subscription service.

In an interview with TalkSPORT, Jordan said: "The opportunity for the Premier League is exhilarating and exciting for whoever wants to come and do this job.

"But they've got people like Bruce Buck heading it up who are part of the so-called 'Big Six' who have got their own agenda and these people turning down the job will be lobbied by the 'Big Six'.

"I've spoken about the Premier League becoming the 'Netflix of football', ie, the video on demand platform that controls its own product.

"If you had 100 million subscribers on 'Premier League TV' like with Netflix at £8 a month, you'd be bringing in £10bn a year, not £8.7bn every three years like the current deal does.

"This is the most exciting, exhilarating job you could have in sport so why no one wants it is beyond me.

"Football's got to own its own outcome and build its own platform and by becoming the Netflix of football you control your own destiny."

Jordan's thoughts make for very good reading/listening and his proposal is one a number of fans are in favour.

Sky Sports HD costs £46 a month, BT Sport HD is another £34.49 a month and Amazon Prime is either £79 for the year or £7.99 a month, that means £88.48 a month or £796.32 for a nine month season, or £1061.76 for the year!

As SPORTbible told you in June, Sky Sports HD costs £46 a month, BT Sport HD sets you back £34.49 a month and Amazon, who have payed to show 20 games a season from 2019/20, have 'Prime' service which is either £79 for the year or £7.99 a month.

That means £88.48 a month for Premier League, £796.32 for a nine month season, or £1061.76 for the year - not the sort of cash most football fans can just pluck out on thin air.

Just imagine having access to a Premier League network containing every game and not needing to find a dodgy stream at 3pm on a Saturday. It's the stuff of dreams.
