“Look, to compare me to Zlatan overall is an insult to him. But right now, in terms of stats and regardless of age. I’m better than Zlatan.”

Los Angeles striker Carlos Vela has hit back at Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who claimed he was "by far" the best player in Major League Soccer.

Earlier this week, the 37-year-old was asked if he was better than the former Arsenal player before Saturday night's game.

He replied: "The whole league, not only Vela.

"By far, because if he's in his prime. How old is he? Twenty-nine and he's playing in MLS and he's in his prime.

"When I was 29 [I was in Europe]. Big difference."

Ibrahimovic also described himself as being "like a Ferrari" in a league full of "Fiats", so the pressure was on for him to perform - and he did just that.

Vela, in the meantime, bagged two goals for top of the table Los Angeles but it wasn't enough to secure all three points.

So, what did the former Arsenal man have to say about Zlatan's bold pre-match comments?

"Look, to compare me to Zlatan overall is an insult to him. But right now, in terms of stats and regardless of age. I'm better than Zlatan." he told reporters after the game.

The Mexican striker makes a valid point.

Vela has been in scintillating form of late, scoring 19 goals in 19 games this season, while Ibrahimovic has bagged 13 goals in 16 games for LA Galaxy.

But clearly the ever-confident Zlatan believes he is the better player.

In a post-match press conference, he took aim at the Carlos Vela comparisons, saying it was a "mistake" to make that judgement.

"Please do not offend me, I don't need to prove nothing, even if I don't score the goals today," Ibrahimovic said in the post-match press conference.

"I have a lot of respect for Vela, he's a good player, but you did one mistake, you compared him with me, that was your biggest mistake."
