The former Celtic defender was impressed, to say the least.

Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson have played a vital part in Liverpool's success since joining.

From winning the Champions League against Spurs to challenging for the Premier League title, the pair have struck up a formidable partnership at the back.

But it turns out these two accomplished defenders bumped into each other way before arriving at Anfield.

Six years ago, playing for Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership, a 19-year-old Robertson played against the man mountain van Dijk during his time at Celtic.

It's fair to say van Dijk was impressed by the left-back's performance in 2013.

The Dutch centre-back even told a member of Celtic's scouting team that they should sign Robertson after his performance against The Bhoys.

In an interview with Liverpool's official website, van Dijk told the story of when he came up against his current teammate:

"Robbo is doing fantastic. Obviously when I came to Celtic, in my first season he played at Dundee United and I already thought he's a very good player and I thought at that time he should join Celtic!" he said.

"I think I said it to one of the scouting guys as well - sometimes I like to give my opinion on players. He's just a great player, [he] works hard. If you need ratings of a game, I don't think he'd ever go lower than a six.

"You can trust him and the connection I have with him is getting better every game.

"He knows obviously what he has in me, and I get it the other way around as well. He's a good guy as well and that obviously helps too."

Celtic paid tribute to their former player van Dijk, as well as Robertson, following their success in the Champions League on Saturday night:

"A winning weekend for some former Celtic players." they said on Twitter.

"Congratulations to Liam Henderson, Virgil van Dijk and one of the Bhoys Andrew Robertson."
