A Spanish fourth division side have changed their name to Flat Earth FC in a quite remarkable turn of events.

Formerly known as Mostoles Balompie, president Javi Poves has decided to make the bold decision of changing the recently promoted club's official title.

"We are a professional football club in the Spanish fourth tier and we are born to unite the voices of millions of flat earth movement followers and all those people who are looking for answers," Poves said in a statement. Spanish fourth division club

He continued, saying: "Football is the most popular sport and has the most impact worldwide, so creating a club dedicated to the flat earth movement is the best way to have a constant presence in the media.

"This will also be the first football club associated with a cause and an idea, without having a specific location.

"Professional football clubs are subject not only to a nation, but also to a city.

"Flat Earth FC is the first football club whose followers are united by the most important thing, which is an idea."

According to Live Science, members of the Flat Earth Society claim to believe the Earth is flat.

They deem 'all evidence to the contrary, such as satellite photos of Earth as a sphere, to be fabrications of a "round Earth conspiracy" orchestrated by NASA and other government agencies.' the website says.

The club, who only have 65 followers on Twitter at the time of writing, have changed their social media in honour of the name change,
