Real Madrid have won La Liga for the first time in five years after their last day of the season victory over Malaga whilst Barcelona's comeback victory over Eibar meant nothing.

Real may have won the Champions League twice in the last three seasons but since 2012 they have had to watch fierce rivals Barcelona win La Liga three times, including back-to-back title the previous two years, and local rivals Atletico Madrid on another occasion.

However this season under Zinedine Zidane they have managed to capture the title for the 33rd time in the club's history, taking them nine titles clear of Barcelona.

Benzema and Ramos celebrate the Frenchman's goal.

They went into the last day of the season three points ahead and favourites to win the title but knew that Barcelona's better head-to-head record meant they couldn't afford to slip up.

Los Blancos didn't have time to get nervy though as Cristiano Ronaldo, who else, put them a goal up after just two minutes and the Bernabeu club never looked back.

Karim Benzema's 11th league goal in the second half all but guaranteed they would win the league as Barcelona trailed Eibar 2-0 with Messi missing a sitter and a penalty.

The Camp Nou side would hit back to lead their match 4-2 but it was too little, too late.
