Every World Cup there is the sad story of one player missing out because of an injury and Lionel Messi and his Argentina teammates clearly felt the sadness of Manuel Lanzini missing out.

The World Cup and injuries go hand in hand, whether it's Franco Baresi somehow returning just 25 days after an injury to his menisconous in 1994 to make the final or David Beckham's infamous metatarsal there will be always someone in risk of missing out or who does miss out.

Neymar's problems in 2014 were the story of the World Cup and the PSG forward looked in risk of missing out altogether this time when he picked up an injury in February.

Mo Salah's coming together with Sergio Ramos in the Champions League final leaves his tournament still in jeopardy and he looks likely to miss Egypt's first game next Friday.

But one player who will definitely miss out now is Argentina forward Manuel Lanzini. The West Ham player was hit by a ruptured anterior knee ligament injury picked up in training.

Reacting to the news Lionel Messi and the rest of the team were clearly very upset:

West Ham players took to social media to wish their teammate at the London Stadium well in his recovery:

Argentina have already lost goalkeeper Sergio Romero to injury with the Manchester United stopper replaced by Tigres' Nahuel Guzman.

The two time World Cup winners, who lost in the final four years ago, are yet to call up a replacement for Lanzini.
