The summer holidays must be really hard for footballers knowing that every move they make will be chronicled by certain newspapers obsessed with what they're doing and knowing that they can't eat too much. Luka Modric had a very different issue.

I often find myself feeling sorry for footballers. During the season they have to stay in incredible shape whilst only working a few hours a day, when I work the evening shift and have nothing to do I usually eat crisps and watch wrestling.

So footballers can't be like the rest of us and fill their quiet times with feeding. Once the season is over though they can go on holiday and really splurge on food and eat as many Jamon Ruffles as they like abroad.

Only they've got to be worried about what shape they return to pre-season is. Sure they've got a small window to indulge but do it too much and you've got double the amount of 'suicide runs' to do when you get back.

Luka Modric has surprised Real Madrid fitness staff with his return to training for pre season but it's not for eating too many kebaba on his 'jollies.'

According to Marca the Croatian midfielder has returned to Real two kilos underweight and fitness coach Antonio Pintus will now have to work on building up the player's muscle.

The Spanish newspaper claim that the player is obsessed with his fitness which would normally be a good thing but perhaps it has backfired on this occasion if he's too lightweight at the moment.

Last season the 31 year-old only scored one goal and did suffer from an injury during the season but was still integral to helping Los Blancos to win a La Liga and Champions League double.

Fortunately for him he now gets to eat all the cake, pizza and burgers he wants- that's how it works right?
