It says a lot if a manager like Sir Alex Ferguson wanted a certain kind of player to play for him during his time at Manchester United.

The former United boss managed some of the very best in the business in his decorated managerial career but it appears he's still mad at one legendary in particular not signing for him.

Bayern Munich and Germany legend Oliver Kahn has revealed that many moons ago, he had the chance to move to Old Trafford, circa 2003 or 2004.

Sir Alex thought it was going to happen but the iconic goalkeeper stayed put at Bayern Munich, amassing 780 appearances in a 14-year stint with the Bavarian giants and winning 22 trophies.

However, the FIFA World Cup 2002 Golden Ball winner, who lost out to Fergie's United side in dramatic fashion in the 1999 Champions League final, expresses regret over not making the move despite his many achievements.

"Sir Alex Ferguson is still mad at me today," the 48-year-old said during an interview with Bild, via Goal.

"He thought that I would move to Man Utd in 2003 or 2004. But I was more interested in trying to define an era at Bayern. Looking back, I should have done it then (joined Man Utd). It would have been a nice challenge for me."

Kahn would have solved a goalkeeping crisis at Manchester United had he joined the club, with the club seriously struggling to replace Peter Schmeichel.

They ended up getting Edwin van Der Sar in from Fulham in 2005 and he was utterly brilliant, playing an integral role in four Premier League title wins, as well as the 2008 Champions League final triumph - with the Dutchman saving Nicolas Anelka's penalty to give the Red Devils the win.

Van der Sar left in 2011 and though it took time for David De Gea to settle in initially, he's been a revelation in between the sticks and cemented his place as one of the very best goalkeepers in world football during his time at United.
