Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson reckons England teammates Mason Mount and Jude Bellingham would transform the Reds into title contenders next season.

Liverpool have suffered a severe dip in form this campaign, having struggled for any kind of consistency.

With the international break looming, Jurgen Klopp's side are languishing in sixth place in the Premier League, and are staring down the barrel of a trophyless campaign.

They were eliminated from both domestic cup competitions, before European giants Real Madrid sealed their Champions League fate, knocking them out 6-2 on aggregate.

Their poor form has led to calls for the club to heavily reinvest in the squad this summer, with a number of players being rumoured with a move to Anfield.

Plenty of the blame has been laid at the door of Liverpool's midfielders, with the likes of Fabinho struggling to reach the heights of last season.

Meanwhile, a whole host of players are approaching the end of their contracts and expected pack their bags at the end of the campaign, allowing for fresh faces to come through the door.

England duo tipped to transform Reds

Two players who have been linked with a move to Anfield are England duo Mount and Bellingham. Whilst Merson reckons they are the missing pieces which would help Liverpool return to winning ways next season.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “Mason Mount was by far Chelsea’s best player last season. He was outstanding. Whoever gets Mason Mount has got the biggest result ever. The kid can play. It’s bad business by Chelsea – they should give him what he’s asking for. You don’t offload your best players.

“If Liverpool go and get Mount and then Jude Bellingham, who could also go to Liverpool, you’ve got a title-contending team. Why would you want to chance that? Why would you make them stronger? I’m a huge fan of Mount, he’s a top-class player.”
