The 'Boro supporters turned on their own goalkeeper, today

You'd think being relegated with three games to spare would be bad enough for Middlesbrough fans, but this afternoon, during 'Boro's 2-1 home defeat to Southampton, the Riverside stadium crowd turned on their home team, in particular goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

The American stopper endured a nightmare 90 minutes on Monday night when Middlesbrough were relegated thanks to a 3-0 defeat against Stamford Bridge, with every goal being put through Guzan's legs for added embarrassment.

And today, Guzan was subjected to the ultimate humiliation, as a section of Middlesbrough supporters behind his goal chanted at the referee to send him off.

Jay Rodriguez gave the Saints the lead before Nathan Redmond doubled the visitor's lead just after the hour mark.

Patrick Bamford pulled a goal back for the home side but it wasn't enough.

Defeat today meant 'Boro have lost 19 times in the league this season and won just five games out of 37.

The home fans will be hoping their fortunes change when they return to the Championship and that they don't have to wait seven years for a return to the top flight like after 'Boro's relegation in 2009.

Presumably Guzan is praying for this season to be over.
