Venezuelan Footballer Gets Sacked By Club For Missing Panenka Penalty

There are a number of reasons as to why a club might take steps to terminate a player's contract - failing to prove fitness or disciplinary reasons being the most common.

Add 'producing a terrible panenka penalty' to the list, which has sparked the end of Brendix Parra's spell at Independiente de Campo Grande.

The Venezuelan tried to be cut and clever in a crucial Copa Sudamericana shoot-out against Colombian outfit La Equidad but his effort was poor and easily gathered by Diego Novoa, who saved it with his chest.

La Equidad would go on to win 4-3 on penalties to progress to the next round and remarkably those high up at Independiente decided to give Parra the boot as a result of his tame costly miss.

Parra is now awaiting the official legal confirmation that will see his contract ripped up, with Independiente president Eriberto Gamarra giving a frank and honest explanation.

"The board of directors decided to dismiss Brendix Parra for the way he kicked the penalty," he told ABC Cardinal, via MARCA.

"If we had qualified to the next round each player would have earned a bit of money."

We've never come across anything like this in our life but somehow Parra is taking it well and not kicking up a fiss.

"It's a difficult situation, but life goes on," Parra said.

Also this month, Vancouver Whitecaps' newcomer Ali Adnan had the chance to put his side 1-0 up against LA Galaxy but fluffed his lines from the spot.

Fortunately for Adnan, however, his job is safe and sound - though he might not be on penalty-taking duties for a while.
