Following Michael Carrick's Manchester United departure, it means Jose Mourinho needs to elect a new captain.

And fans have voted on who they want to see don the skippers armband.

Carrick captained his final United game last weekend against Watford, with Mourinho set to appoint a new full-time skipper.

The likes of David De Gea, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and Chris Smalling have enjoyed captaincy in the season just gone.

But who'll lead United's charge next campaign?

Well, Manchester Evening News ran a poll asking United fans who they wanted to captain their club.

The poll included United's Spanish pair Ander Herrera and David De Gea, as well as Paul Pogba, not to mention an 'other' category.

Herrera and Pogba both garnered 17% of the votes, De Gea received a whopping 61%.

It left some United fans split, though:

De Gea, 27, was named Manchester United's Player of the Year, and is easily the clubs best player.

He's enjoyed seven seasons at Old Trafford, and has not just become a crucial member of the side but also a senior player who commands a lot of respect from his fellow colleagues.

Is De Gea the right player to captain United? If not, let us know who you think should wear the armband from next season?
