Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez hasn't been particularly busy in this summer's transfer window, but it looks like the former Real Madrid and Liverpool manager will splash the cash sooner rather than later.

According to Bleacher Report, the recently promoted side are going to make a hefty £25 million bid for Everton midfielder James McCarthy.

McCarthy has impressed Ronald Koeman during his time at Goodison, despite making just 12 Premier League appearances last season because of recurring injury problems.

Last week, Benitez mentioned McCarthy when speaking to the media in Dublin, and admitted his admiration for the Republic of Ireland international, but he is not 'our first target':

"He (McCarthy) is a good player but we now have a lot of them at this club." Benitez said, via ChronicleLive

"We have been linked with around 100 players but he is not our first target at the moment."

Dean Jones from Bleacher Report has, however, reported that Newcastle will make a £25 million bid for McCarthy:

Newcastle have so far completed the signings of former Manchester City defender Florian Lejeune, who joined from Spanish side Eibar on a five-year deal.

The club have also tied up the permanent signing of winger Christian Atsu from Chelsea for an undisclosed fee and Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid.

On Wednesday afternoon, news emerged that the club have brokered a deal for Borussia Dortmund's Spanish U21 midfielder Mikel Merino.

Merino will travel to the North East to put pen to paper on a contract at St. James' Park, after spending just one season with Dortmund.
