Ladies and gentlemen, we can officially confirm that the summer transfer window's first outrageous rumour has emerged. Sit back, relax and try to take in the utter madness of it all.

Reports suggest that on this glorious Saturday morning, Liverpool have made a 'formal and firm offer' for the Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio.

It certainly looks like Jurgen Klopp's side are ready to break the bank for the 22-year-old.

Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo claim that Jurgen Klopp's side have tabled a €180 million (£158m) bid for the player, who's contract runs out in 2022.

The report also reveals that Real Madrid have the offer on the table and will 'study it'.

Asensio, who has a release clause of €700 million, is obviously a huge talent but he was far from making Zinedine Zidane's starting XI every week.

He appeared in 53 of 62 matches for Los Blancos last season, but only started 19 games in total.

The 22-year-old certainly has a long way to go, but Liverpool fans will undoubtably be excited by the transfer links.

Asensio is currently at the World Cup with Spain, but has yet to make a real impact at the tournament.

Los Blancos are known for splashing the cash on big, marketable signings but one of their greatest ever additions cost them a mere €3.5 million euros from Real Mallorca.

Barcelona were reluctant to pay RCD Mallorca an extra couple of million for Asensio and there loss was Real's gain, as the Spaniard has transformed into one of the most exciting players in football.

Real handed him an extended contract until 2023 back in September, complete with an insane €700 million release clause, but Liverpool are clearly not deterred by it.

Thoughts on the possibility of Asensio in the Premier League?

From a neutral's perspective I'm sure many would love to see the Spaniard play in England, but €180 million is a hell of a lot of money.
