Just when you thought the race for Alexis Sanchez's signature was a straight head-to-head between Manchester City and United, along come Liverpool and their £142 million of Philippe Coutinho money to throw a major spanner in the works.

A few days ago, it seemed as though Sanchez's long expected move to City was done and dusted, with several reports indicating that the Chilean forward had agreed personal terms with the Premier League leaders ahead of a £20 million move to the Etihad Stadium.

Then along came Manchester United, who were willing to better City's offer with a £35 million bid of their own or a part exchange involving Armenian playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan. This prompted City to drop their interest in a January move for the Arsenal forward with the intention on gambling on Sanchez turning United down and waiting until the summer to make the switch to Eastlands for free at the end of his Arsenal contract.

And now, Liverpool are believed to have entered the race for the former Barcelona star's signature, according to the Mirror.

Following the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona, earlier this week, the Anfield club have over £140 million at their disposal to add fresh attacking impetus to Jurgen Klopp's squad and, with Sanchez available for £35 million, a relative bargain in today's market, a bid for the 28-year-old seems to make perfect sense.

Discussions are believed to be underway between Klopp and Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group about lodging a potential bid for Sanchez, although it will be difficult for the Merseyside club to persuade the Chilean to move to Anfield due to both City and United being able to offer significantly higher wages than the Reds.

City are willing to pay Sanchez £285,000-a-week while United are happy to go over £300,000-a-week in order to usurp their Manchester rivals.

But where will Sanchez end up playing his football? City, United or Liverpool? Or maybe even somewhere else should previous suitors Chelsea and PSG re-enter the race for his signature.
