It obviously came as a surprise to the Spanish midfielder.

After weeks and weeks of constant transfer speculation, Manchester United finally made the decision to splash ยฃ75 million on former Everton striker Romelu Lukaku.

For many it came as a surprise. Lukaku was expected to join former club Chelsea, while many reported that Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata would complete a move to Old Trafford.

One of those shocked by Manchester United's decision to snub Morata was midfielder and fellow countryman Ander Herrera, who has revealed that it's 'a shame' that the 24-year-old didn't switch clubs this summer.

In an interview with AS, the 27-year-old said: "I even started to think I'd be playing with Morata, he was really close to signing.

"It's a shame he's not with us but he's a top striker and will do well wherever he plays."

It was thought that Morata was himself interested in a move to Old Trafford, but it looked like Real Madrid were holding out for more than Manchester United were willing to offer.

It has been a strange few weeks for Morata. Back in May, Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reported that the Spanish international has agreed terms with AC Milan.

The report stated that Morata has agreed terms of ยฃ125,000 a week with the Rossoneri, and the transfer fee being talked about is โ‚ฌ60 million (ยฃ62 million)

Then Manchester United expressed an interest, but that failed to materialise either.

From following a number of United players on Instagram to dying his hair red ahead of a move, it looked like Morata was all set on a move.

Do you think Morata needs to move away from Madrid to seek regular first team football or should he fight for his place at Los Blancos?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
