The latest Ballon d'Or odds makes for interesting reading.

Naturally, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are in the discussion.

The pair have hogged the coveted individual prize since 2008. They've each bagged an impressive five gongs following their brilliance for Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively.

Ronaldo and Messi have won the lot. And, last season, they continued to rake in silverware.

Messi claimed La Liga honours while Ronaldo made it three consecutive Champions League titles after soundly beating Liverpool.

The Barcelona magician chipped in with an absurd 34 league goals, as for Ronaldo, he weighed in with an impressive 15 goals in Europe.

But the Ballon d'Or picture has been given a shake up following events which transpired at the World Cup.

Messi and Ronaldo failed to deliver on the international stage which paved the way for other superstars to make a name for themselves.

Namely Luka Modric and Kylian Mbappe who are both ahead of the Argentine legend in the race for the Ballon d'Or, according to bookies.

Croatia's captain guided his country to a World Cup final. While the 32-year-old endured defeat, he did bag gold in the shape of the Golden Ball award.

And following his sublime World Cup, he's now second favourite to be crowned with the Ballon d'Or.

Mbappe, who claimed FIFA Young Player Award, pips Messi to third spot and is priced at 10/1.

The Portuguese international is the current favourite at 1/4. Messi is priced at 12/1 to be Ballon d'Or winner.

Harry Kane, Kevin De Bruyne, Mohamed Salah, Neymar, Eden Hazard and Luis Suarez round off the top ten.
