If your team has ever suffered the heartbreak of defeat in a penalty shoot out, you might have put it down to psychological disadvantages.

According to the experts, a player who takes the second penalty in a shoot-out is under more pressure.

So after years and years of the same old routine, The English Football League (EFL) have decided to change things up and break tradition ahead of the 2017/18 season.

During this season's Carabao Cup, Checkatrade Trophy and the play-offs, the ABBA penalty shoot out format will be introduced to try and combat these 'disadvantages'.

So how does it work?

First and foremost, 'the winner takes it all' during the ABBA penalty shoot out. 'Mamma Mia' that was a terrible joke.

I'll stop now.

So what happens is team A will step up first in the penalty shoot-out. Team B will then take two penalties in a row. Team A will then take the fourth and fifth penalty and so on, until each team had taken five.

UEFA have previously commented on the format, saying:

"The hypothesis is that the player taking the second kick in the pair is under greater mental pressure.

"If the opposition's first penalty in the pair has been successful, a miss by the second penalty-taker in the pair could mean the immediate loss of a match for his team, especially from the fourth pair of penalties onwards."

In addition, the referee will toss a coin twice to determine which end the penalties are being taken and who will take first, and fourth.

If you are fascinated by the new rule, the first opportunity for its use will come during the Carabao Cup's first round ties on August 8-9.
