Roger Federer, the greatest tennis player of our generation, won his eighth Wimbledon title this afternoon after a 6-3 6-1 6-4 victory over Croatia's Marin Cilic.

Following victories in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2012, the Swiss third seed showed his class both on and off the court, sending this message to the emotional Croatian shortly after victory:

After his win, Federer went onto say: "Congratulations on a wonderful tournament, Marin, you should be really proud as it is a special occasion to play in the final. Be proud of yourself and I hope down the road we can play some better ones."

A true gentlemen of the game.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique went onto label Roger as one of the 'best sportsmen he has ever seen'.

As well as Federer, the Spaniard named teammate Lionel Messi and Basketball legend Michael Jordan as the ultimate GOAT's:
