Well this is awkward...

At 11:08 this morning, Hull City announced that the club would not be offering defender Alex Bruce a new deal.

It was your standard end of season routine. The club confirmed it's yearly 'retained' and 'released' list via their website and everybody nodded in either agreement or disagreement.

But for Alex Bruce, it was more shock than disappointment.

To put his release into perspective, Bruce made a total of 104 appearances for the club and helped the team clinch promotion to the Premier League in 2012/13 and 2015/16.

He spent a total of five years at Hull City and was regarded as a key player throughout that time period.

So what If I told you that Bruce wasn't even aware that Hull would not be offering him a new deal come June?

Well, this actually happened and Bruce took to Twitter shortly after the club announced it's decision to release the 32-year-old.

@HullCity tweeted the following on Wednesday morning:

Over an hour later, Bruce replied: "Thanks for letting me know!! All the best..."

Awkward.

Scottish Premiership side Motherwell then took advantage of the situation by offering Bruce a 'nine year contract', but apologised for 'not telling him...':

It didn't stop there.

Bruce replied to Motherwell saying: "See you in pre-season!'

Former QPR player Marc Bircham then chipped in with his own story.

During his spell at the club, Bircham and former teammate Danny Shittu found out that they were transfer listed while watching Sky Sports News:

Madness. I'm sure Bruce will quickly find a new club, but that was a Twitter moment for the ages.

UPDATE:

It turns out Bruce did know about leaving - he clearly just wanted to make things a little awkward:
