Tributes have been pouring in for the late Ray Wilkins throughout today, with his former clubs all paying rather touching tributes to the ex-England captain.

But AC Milan's message of condolence struck a particular chord with us this afternoon.

Wilkins passed away following a heart attack last week, and the 61-year-old had battled illness bravely for some time now, one of the many qualities which made him such a hero to football fans all over the world.

The former Rangers midfielder spent three years in Italy with Milan, between 1984 and 1987, and it appears his efforts at the San Siro have lived long in the memory.

The Rossoneri posted a photo on Twitter of Wilkins in action in their iconic red and black kit, and perfectly summed up why he'll be so sorely missed:

Coincidentally, AC are taking on bitter city rivals Inter Milan this evening, and before kick-off club legend Franco Baresi laid a wreath with Wilkins' old shirt on the San Siro pitch before kick-off:

A touch of class from the Rossoneri. Former England captain Wilkins, a hugely popular figure within the game, was the subject of a slew of messages from the footballing world, who expressed their sadness and offered their condolences to his family.

RIP, Ray.
