Steven Gerrard's contributions on and off the pitch have been marked, with news that the former England skipper will receive the freedom of his hometown of Liverpool.

The 36-year old retired from the game in November after a glittering career playing for his beloved Liverpool.

The local lad dragged the Reds out of the muck on so many occasions, playing an instrumental role in the memorable Champions League success in 2005 as well as the 2006 FA Cup Final triumph over West Ham - where Gerrard netted a breathtaking strike to level matters and take the game to extra time.

In total, he made 748 appearances in an 18-year stint with Liverpool, scoring 191 goals from central midfield.

And it's not just on the pitch where Gerrard has made contributions.

He has been a prolific supporter of charity work - donating £96,000 to the Hillsborough Family Support Group in January as well as a £500,000 donation being made to Alder Hey Children's through his foundation back in 2013, with funds from his testimonial going straight into the hospital.

He is a legend in all senses to Liverpool fans and he is now set to receive freedom of the city.

Gerrard has been nominated by the Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, and it is expected to be officially decided at a city council meeting on January 18, with the actual event taking place in the coming months.

Commenting on the special honour, Gerrard said:

"I was stunned and overwhelmed when I heard my name was being put forward by the Mayor to receive this honour.

"Liverpool is my home city and so to be acknowledged in this way leaves me speechless. To even think about getting such an award makes me feel very humble and of course immensely proud."

A huge but deserved honour for the former Liverpool No.8.

Congratulations, Steven.
