Ever since Steven Gerrard left Anfield it felt almost inevitable that he would be back at some point in some sort of role.

Initially it was thought that he might return to the Premier League on loan during the American off season but when that didn't happen and Gerrard retired at the end of the MLS season a coaching role became highly likely.

After turning down the managerial role at MK Dons and a chance to continue his playing career at AC Milan, Gerrard took on a coaching role in the club's youth side in February, with his duty to help the up and coming youngsters in the ranks at the club.

But now reports have come in that the 36-year-old is to take up an even more important role within the club's academy set-up.

That's because according to the reliable Paul Joyce, Gerrard is set to become the club's Under 18 manager when next season rolls around.

The Times' Northern Football correspondent shed more light on the story in his following tweets:

Liverpool fans will no doubt be hoping this is the first step towards their idol going on to manage the first-team, but there's also further good news for the Reds.

Joyce writes that Gerrard may well make a surprise cameo appearance in a post-season friendly match with Sydney FC in May. Jurgen Klopp's side play the A-League side just three days after the Premier League season finishes and there is talk that Gerrard could be back in Liverpool red, like he was recently for a charity game, but this team with the first-team for the game in front of an expected crowd of 80,000 people at the ANZ stadium.
