Southampton have announced that manager Mark Hughes has been sacked.

The 55-year-old former Stoke City boss has been in charge for eight months, but a poor start to the season has seen the club pull the trigger on his tenure.

The club made the announcement official on Twitter.

"Southampton Football Club can today confirm it has parted company with first-team manager Mark Hughes," reads the club's statement.

"Assistant first-team manager Mark Bowen and assistant first-team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki have also left the club.

"We would like to express our thanks to Mark and his staff for all of their efforts during their time at St Mary's.

"The search for a new manager to take the club forward is already under way.

"First-team assistant coach Kelvin Davis will lead the team for Wednesday's Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley."

Hughes' last match in charge of Southampton was a 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Saturday. In the aftermath, he said that he was "really pleased" with taking a point from the match.

"When you look at our performance and the table, we are not where we want to be. Are we under-performing compared to last year? Probably not," he said (via BBC Sport).

"We have to get maximum points in games, everybody saw by the manner of our performance that we are a good side, we just have to keep working and performing."
