That didn't take long, did it?

Southampton striker Shane Long put his side 1-0 up away at Watford with the fastest goal in Premier League history this evening, with the Irishman finding the net just seven seconds into the game at Vicarage Road according to Opta.

Hornets centre-back Craig Cathcart gave the ball straight away from kick-off and before the score graphic had loaded up properly, Long had put the ball in the back of the net.

Credit to the 32-year old for pressing right from the off and getting his just rewards with a very tidy chipped finish over Ben Foster.

Long's rapid opener eclipses the previous record set by Spurs legend Ledley King. Back in 2000, King put his side 1-0 up at Valley Parade at exactly 9.82 seconds in the game but his achievement has been finally been beaten after 19 years.

Christian Eriksen came close last season when he notched Spurs ahead in a fast and furious start against Man United at Wembley after 10.54 seconds but that goal has now moved down to the fourth-fastest in Premier League history after Long's strike.

King tipped Harry Kane to knock him off his perch but it is now Long who will be the answer to many pub quiz questions in years to come.
