An Italian second division game was abandoned just five seconds in after Leece player Manuel Scavone suffered a sickening head injury.

Straight from kick-off, Ascoli looked to get on the front foot immediately, launched the ball up to Giacomo Beretta in the air.

Following an accidental clash of heads, Scavone landed horribly - his head smacking the turf of the pitch with frightening impact as he was knocked unconsciousness.

Both sets of players frantically signalled for help, which came in the form of medics, and they also moved advertising boards so the ambulance could get through.

It was then decided the game would be postponed and arranged for a later date.

Scavone, on loan at Lecce at Parma, regained consciousness in hospital. A statement from the Vito Fazzi facility, as per Football Italia, said he underwent CT scans and "no internal lesions" to the cranium, neck or torso were discovered.

He is to be monitored in hospital for 24 hours as a precaution but appears to be doing well. Lecce posted a picture of Savcone smiling with Beretta, the opposition player involved in the collision, visiting him in hospital.

Ascoli club manager Francesco Lillo and Lecce general director Giuseppe Mercadante also checked in to see how he was recovering.
