Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross's season appears to be over before it's begun after suffered a horrific ankle break in a pre-season friendly.

The Potters hosted Leicester City at the Bet365 Stadium today in their final friendly before the Championship season gets under way.

And just before half-time, Shawcross landed awkwardly on his left ankle as he performed a slide tackle in attempt to clear the ball after snuffing out the threat of Marc Albrighton near Stoke's corner flag.

Immediately the former Manchester United youngster waved his arms in agony as concerned teammates rushed over to him. Slow motion replays showed the sickening twistening of his ankle.

There was a five minute delay in the game so that Shawcross could be attended to be physios and paramedics and he was subsequently taken off on a stretcher to a standing ovation from both sets of supporters in the ground.

Shawcross was heading into his tenth season as Stoke City captain but given the severe nature of this injury, there are fears that he could be out for the full campaign.

We await an update on Shawcross' situation and hope for an incredibly speedy recovery.
