Cristiano Ronaldo put on a superb captain's performance after firing Portugal into the Nations League final with a hat-trick against Switzerland.

The 34-year-old Portugal captain handed his side the advantage in the first half when he scored the opener from a fantastic free-kick.

Ricardo Rodríguez struck back in the second half for Switzerland after VAR was called into action and awarded a penalty to Vladimir Petković's side.

However, the Juventus ace was not going to allow the 2016 Euro champions to be knocked out in the semi-finals of the inaugural Nations League competition.

Ronaldo stepped up again late into the second half and bagged his brace with a tidy finish past Yann Sommer.

But hey, he wasn't done there.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star completed his hat-trick to secure his side a 3-1 victory at the Estádio do Dragão.

Portugal are into the final where they will face either England or the Netherlands on Sunday.

The Three Lions will take on Ronald Koeman's side tomorrow at the Estádio D Afonso Henriques.

Ahead of the match, Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka had warned his teammates about the threat posed from the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

"We saw [Eden] Hazard's qualities last week and throughout the season," he said.

"He is one of the best players in the world.

"And now we come up against another who has similar qualities.

"We know all about Ronaldo but Portugal are not a one-man team."
